Osu. Well,
Winter Camp 2012 has come and gone and so I thought I would share some of the
weekend’s events with you. The
highlights were: lots of training, very little sleep due to the snoring of
cabin mates and lots of training. Pretty well a typical winter camp. Actually,
all kidding aside, there were a lot of highlights and a lot of fun. This was my
second time at winter camp and it seemed to me to be a lot more relaxed than
the first time I went, possibly due to knowing what to expect and also due to
the fact that this time I wasn’t the only one from our club attending. This
year South Delta was also represented by Sempai Mike, Sempai Georgina and Jeff.

The word of the weekend was "standardization". The
Shihan’s and Sensei’s have determined that the organization needs to implement
a certain standard when it comes to teaching the students the various
techniques from the basics to kata and everything in between. Shihan Stuart’s
comment was "I can pretty well tell what dojo you are from and who your
instructor is based on how you perform the technique...and that's not always a
good thing!". This is still a
work in progress and some of the things that we have been told in the past were the
incorrect way of doing things are now the correct way and vice versa, although
this is still up for some debate between the various Senseis.

On Friday night we worked on our stances and the transitions
between stances and incorporated them into ido geiko and basic katas with
Sensei Brad. On Saturday we worked on the 1st kyu katas - Tekki ni,
Saifa and Gekisai Sho - working on the cadence or rhythm as well as the proper
techniques of each move with Shihan Don. We also spent time working on goshin
jitsu techniques with Sensei Larry and Shihan Don each teaching a class.

Early Saturday morning we did the traditional 6 am run up the road and back and then we
went out onto the frozen lake for kihon and ido geiko with the snow falling
around us. Sunday morning we skipped the run since it was even colder than the
previous day and the road was too icy for proper traction. We instead went out onto the lake for an
abbreviated work out...really cold at 6am. The sky was crystal clear and the
crescent moon was intensely bright. Awesome to work out under.

Saturday afternoon was the board breaking. Sempai Mike ploughed
through his with no issues at all. Most candidates were successful although a
few failed to complete their breaks and will have to attempt again at summer
camp. Sempai Georgina pulled a calf muscle or tweaked a
ligament during fighter training with Sensei Leo on Saturday afternoon and so
she was unable to train again on Sunday. Sempai Mike, Jeff and I made it to all
the sessions.

The second training on Sunday was a free for all with each
of the instructors - Shihan Don, Sensei Brad, Sensei Larry, Sensei Leo and
Sensei Terry - teaching for 15 to 20 minutes each. I found this to be the
hardest work out session of them all and one of the best. A lot of moving and
sweating made even more challenging due to being exhausted from the other work
outs and the lack of sleep. Did I mention snoring yet? Ask Sempai Mike about
it... auto erotic asphyxiation comes to mind.

The trips to and from camp were uneventful and all things
considered it was a pretty successful weekend.

Hopefully the others can add some more insight to the
weekend as my note taking was pretty poor this time around and my memory is
already starting to fade. Sempai Georgina took lots of notes so she should have
more to add.

There are plenty of photographs to view. Check out the
IKOK-C Facebook page or the Kyokushin Canada website. I will be posting some
photos on our blog and on our Facebook page.

Quote of
the weekend: "The dullest pencil is better than the sharpest memory"
~ Sensei Brad.

Osu, Rob.

Hey everyone, it's been a week since Summer Camp ended so I thought I had better write a little about it! Had a great time as usual (if hot, sweaty, dusty and exhausting workouts are your idea of fun!) and met up with a lot of old friends and even made some new ones. This year Campground South Delta was occupied by Sempai Mike, Sempai Greg, Sempai, Daryl, Sempai Scott, Sempai Georgina, myself, Geoff, Dave, Dita, Casandra and Cynthia. Sensei Les and Gwen stopped by to visit on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and to have some lunch with us. Speaking of lunch, our campsite was blessed to have fantastic meals prepared by Greg, Cynthia and Georgina...roughing it never tasted so good. The weekend was packed full of training and instruction starting on Friday night and ending on Monday morning and once again was highlighted by the Yudansha Kumite held on Sunday afternoon. As most of you know the Yudansha Kumite, or Black Belt fights, are the final test for those that have been grading all year for Shodan or above and year after year it never disappoints for sheer excitement and inspiration. I have started a Facebook page called South Delta Dojo and have posted photos from the camp on it. I will be updating it with club events and photos so be sure to check in regularly. You should be able to Google "South Delta Dojo Facebook" or copy and paste the following address into your browsers search box to access it. http://www.facebook.com/pages/South-Delta-Dojo/194346513959567. Some day I might even figure out how to post a link to it from our website.
See everyone in September.
Osu, Rob.

The South Delta Karate Club was well represented at this years Canadian Championships, from competitors to volunteers to coaches and officials we pretty well covered it all. While our number of competitors were down a bit this year our results and spirit were not. Stephanie placed first in her non-contact division and second in her kata division, Keanna placed first in her non-contact division and also participated in kata and both Kai and Aden placed equal thirds in their non-contact division. Also participating in the tournament and gaining great experience were Duncan, Cassie, Morgan and James who all took part in their respective kata divisions. Helping out as volunteers this year were Gord, Rick, Maya and James who worked tirelessly throughout the day doing jobs such as time keeping, ring marshaling, padding up the kids and just generally helping organize the chaos. Without the help of all the volunteers this tournament would not be the success that it is and the tournament committee really appreciates the work that they do. Helping Sempai Mike coach our team this year were Jeff and Kyle; they kept our team relaxed, focused and inspired throughout the day and the results reflect that. Our tournament ring officials this year were Sempai Greg who worked as both a referee and corner judge and Sempai Daryl and Rob who both worked as corner judges. The tournament lunch was once again provided by our dojo with Kyle and his parents Al and Dawn doing a wonderful job in providing us with more than enough food and drink to keep us going for the day. They have been looking after this for few years now and there is nothing but positive comments from everyone about how it gets better and better each year. On behalf of Sensei Les, Gwen and our other Sempais a great big thank you to all those that participated as mentioned above and to those who also took the time out of their Saturday to come watch and cheer on all the fighters and participants throughout the day.

Click on our Links button and go to the IKOK-C website and Facebook page to view photos from the tournament.
